DSA Webinar: Gaining understanding by structuring inquiry: probing data with one right question after another

Good evidence starts with good questions. In this webinar, our guest speakers look at the path from questions to evidence. Dr Stefaan Verhulst (The GovLab, NYU and The Data Tank) will explore where questions come from, which ones matter, and how governance and political priorities shape them. Prof David Hand (Imperial College London) will then look at how these questions are turned into statistical questions that data can answer, and what can go wrong along the way, drawing on his new book What is the Question? Deciding What You Really Want to Know (2026). Chaired by Dr Zeynep Engin, Co-Founder and Director, DSA.

DSA Webinar: Avoiding Strategy Slop: Reimagining Government Strategy for the Digital Statecraft Era

Governments face fast-moving technology, connected crises and falling public trust, yet their capacity for long-term strategy seems to be shrinking. In this webinar, DSA Fellow Giulio Quaggiotto (Advisor, UAE PMO) shares findings from his fellowship research on how government strategy can adapt to the digital era. He is joined by Sir Geoff Mulgan (UCL), Aziza Umarova (Agency for Strategic Development and Reforms, President of Uzbekistan) and Pia Andrews (Northern Territory Government, Australia), who will reflect on new approaches from around the world and what they mean for how governments plan, buy and organise. Chaired by Tim Gordon, Co-Founder, DSA.
